DRESSED TO THRILL: Costumes, fancy dresses

Did you know that costume parties once were considered scandalous in Britain for a long while, because men and women associated them with debauchery and decadence? In the United Stats, however, costumes and fancy has, mostly, as of the mass appeal of Halloween and pantomimes. Many of my favorite childhood recollections are of Halloween costume parties, when I think I pretty much covered the pantheon of superheroes. The best part is that costumes are still an important bit of our Halloween, though we’ve grown too old for trick-or-treating habit.

In the West, costume parties are most probably to have started in Britain. The masked affairs of the seventeen hundreds were probably the 1st fancy dress affairs. Under Queen Victoria they introduced fancy dress parties, which then became more and more popular. In modern eras, on both sides of the Atlantic, costumes have become the life of all lot of modern parties. So many of the favorite scenes from shows include costume parties, isn’t that right? Do you recall Mean Girls, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Birdcage?

Scary or funny?

It is no wonder then that costumes and fancy dresses have become a huge industry to serve to the demands of the populations. There are two main reactions you could want to elicit from folk when you choose to appear in fancy dress. You either want to scare them, or make them laugh. As a result, the most popular costumes are ones of characters from horror or comedy movies. Dracula is a perennial favorite, as are Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin. More recently, there is popularity about TV shows, such as Friends.

Pick and choose

So how do you get yourself a costume? First, of course, you must decide what you wish to turn up as, after carefully considering the theme of the party. When you’ve done that, you have 2 options. You can drive down to a good fancy dress shop and try on a few and finally decide on one. Who knows, while in the place, you might feel so attracted to a certain dress that you could give up your original costume idea completely. Your second option would be search for a costume on the Internet, among the many sites that offer outfits. Though this is evidently the simpler choice, it can turn out to be more complicated than it looks. Especially if your costume is delivered late, or if you discover that it fits badly or is made of low quality material, or that it is not how you had imagined it to be. There is the expression, seeing is believing.

Make your own

Of course, you could make your own costume outfit. This is especially useful for pantomimes, when you can put together Robin Hood costumes out of old leggings, and add on trimmings to suitable jackets and feathers to old caps. If you happen to have any needlework skills also, you can create old outfits or costumes a whole new twist and casually slip on a brand-new character without spending more than a few cents. Now how about that —- self-made fancy dresses —- for a new party thought?
