Monkey Uses Brain to Control Robotic Arm
June 5th, 2008 • Related • Filed Under
A monkey who wants to eat marshmallows could hold the answer to how paraplegics and handicapped people may soon be able to control robotic hands and limbs using the brain.
Researchers have implanted microelectrodes into the monkey’s brain which allows the signals to be translated into commands that move the robotic arm to grab the marshmallow and move the arm to the monkey’s mouth. Soon we’ll be surprised seeing monkeys clutching a business card holder with its robotic arm. This is such an interesting study and I am hoping that it makes its way to help people with disabilities as long as no innocent animals are being tortured and abused.
