Pilobolus at the Oscars

Pilobolus is an internationally well-known dance company that began in a dance class at Dartmouth College in 1971 actually adopted the name from a sun-loving fungus found in pastures and barnyards. The group soon became an independent organization and was acclaimed for its strong element of physical contact between performers and contortions of human forms.

In the 79th Annual Academy Awards last year, they performed a silhouette act behind a white semi-transparent screen, where they form different figures – first, the Oscar statue, then scenes or logos from various movies such as “Happy Feet”, “Little Miss Sunshine”, “The Departed”, “The Devil Wear Prada”, and “Snakes on the Plane”. Watching those shadow figures slowly and gracefully forming shapes really made me think how they practice those complicated and gymnastic stunts. This is definitely a bravo for the amazing and extraordinary performance.
